BAE Systems Selects Platform Computing Grid Technology to Reduce Costs and Drive Long Term Collaboration within the Aerospace Industry

Platform Computing, the largest independent provider of grid software, today announced that BAE SYSTEMS, the international defence and aerospace systems company, has selected Platform as a key partner as it moves towards a high performance, grid-enabled architecture. Platform’s grid solutions will enable the aerospace giant to improve collaboration with key partners in the industry while maximising IT investment.

Platform LSF, the foundation of Platform's grid computing solutions, will allow BAE SYSTEMS to harness the untapped power of its globally distributed, heterogeneous computing resources. As a result, BAE SYSTEMS will be able to match technology demands with supply to improve utilisation, enhance performance, and reduce IT costs, improving overall business performance.

In addition, BAE SYSTEMS is using Platform's technology to grid-enable applications at the development stage. This will allow the company to establish a grid computing infrastructure across multiple hardware and software platforms, creating a virtual organisation to pool and share computing resources across geographic sites.

"Collaboration is key to the success of the aerospace industry, and grid-enabling our resources will allow our scientists and engineers to work more closely with other partners in the industry" says Alan Gould, Group leader – Integration Technologies, Advanced Technology Centre at BAE SYSTEMS. "Platform's grid computing technology will also give us the ability to control the information that we share and how we collaborate."

BAE SYSTEMS chose Platform citing Platform’s business-driven approach, sector experience gained working with companies such as Airbus, Boeing and BASF, and close working relationship with Globus. This was a key factor for Gould: "It's imperative that our systems, and those of our partners, are interoperable so standards are essential."

"With our grid computing software, we can help organisations such as BAE SYSTEMS overcome IT constraints to make previously inconceivable ideas, businesses, products and services a reality," comments Kieran Lees, Managing Director Northern Europe at Platform Computing. "As a pioneer in the industry, and with a reputation for innovation, BAE SYSTEMS is the ideal company for us to work with and this partnership will consolidate Platform’s position as a leader in supplying grid solutions to the Industrial Manufacturing sector".

BAE SYSTEMS is deploying Platform technology in its Advanced Technology Centre where it will safely test and grid-enable applications. It plans to expand this infrastructure throughout the organisation.
