France Téléthon 2001
Platform Accelerates France Telethon ‘Decrypthon’ Project
Overview
- Major research project linking 75,000 Windows-based desktops in France via the internet
- First comparison of 500,000 proteins in different living species and carry out proteome mappings using grid computing
- 100,000 internet users registered for the Decrypthon Project and 80,000 computers put to use for research purposes
Challenges
- Accelerate genomic research
Solution
Results
- If just one standard PC were used for proteome mapping, the calculation would take approx. 417,000 days, or 1,170 years
- By mobilizing 100,000 internet users and 180,000 PC's, the calculation will only take about three months, or ten million hours
- Creation of a virtual supercomputer:
Calculation power up to 40 teraflops
Three million research jobs over 30 days
11 million hours of computational research
“Platform is clearly one of the leaders in grid computing, with proven solutions and expertise in technical environments.”
Philippe Bricard, Manager of Grid Computing Solutions Sales EMEA, IBM
